Shenzhen officially got two new districts as of Saturday, with the former Longhua New Area becoming Longhua District and former Pingshan New Area becoming Pingshan District, though the size of Shenzhen remains unchanged.
The new designations aren't likely to mean more to the ordinary person than a small name change on city maps.
The new districts will be granted with the same authorities afforded to other districts, such as district-level legislative and judicial organs, according to the Shenzhen Daily, which also reported that management committees have been dispatched to the areas.
Pingshan District is home to automaker BYD, which specializes in making electric vehicles and vehicle batteries. The district borders Huizhou to the east.
Longhua District is home to the Shenzhen North Railway Station and large manufacturing areas. It borders Dongguan to the north.
The changes mean that only the Guangming and Dapeng new areas are not district level.
