According to Guangdong’s Department of Civil Affairs, typhoon Merbok slammed three cities – Huizhou, Shanwei, Meizhou – and 11 counties in the province, affecting a total of 122,000 people. Although there have been no casualties, Merbok caused an estimated loss of 260 million yuan in damage.
The first typhoon to hit South China this year, Merbok made landfall on Shenzhen's Dapeng Peninsula late at night on June 12. The next day, heavy rains hit the Pearl River Delta – flooding roads and a subway station in Shenzhen – and eastern Guangdong.
