As of November 1, 2023, both Chinese citizens and foreigners will no longer be required to fill out health declaration codes when entering or leaving the Chinese mainland, marking the end of a chapter that began with the re-launch of the code in January 2020.

The notice emphasizes that travelers who exhibit symptoms of infectious diseases or have been diagnosed with communicable illnesses must voluntarily report their health status to customs officials and cooperate with health quarantine procedures.

In fact, as of October 28, some individuals entering and leaving the Chinese mainland through the Shenzhen border had already noticed that the equipment for health declaration was being withdrawn, and they were not required to fill out or present health declaration codes.

Currently, the WeChat and Alipay mini-programs, as well as the web versions of the health declaration forms, remain operational.

Travelers who still need to complete customs declarations can do so by scanning the relevant QR codes and filling out the necessary forms online.

The change comes as a welcome development for travelers, and represents the scrapping of the last (?) remaining COVID rules for those entering or leaving the country.
