New Shanghai Shop: Eth0s

From the moment you push open a grey concrete wall that serves as the main entrance for eth0s, you know you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem. Walking past a seemingly random visual display of sporadically placed furniture and black and white photographs on solid black walls, a staircase leads you down to the basement level, where eth0s’ 1,000-square-meter showroom of fashion items, furniture and home décor products sits.

Started a few years ago at a much smaller space on Changle Lu, this multi-brand store’s current location is a functioning bomb shelter, which brings a mystic tranquility to the space. On the fashion side of things, eth0s carries the works of about a dozen labels from Europe, the US, Australia and Japan, and they are separated into different areas inside the showroom to reflect and recreate the ‘ethos’ and atmosphere of each.

All of the brands that are carried here have their own distinct styles that appeal to a niche audience with high disposable income. Geoffrey B. Small, an American fashion label that specializes in luxury handmade and eco-sustainable design, is one of the brands for which eth0s is the exclusive distributor in China. A blazer that uses pure and finely woven cashmere produced by a historic fabric mill in Italy goes for RMB47,000.

Furniture items in the eth0s showroom create a striking contrast to the entrance on the ground level, thanks to Ning Ju (凝具), a label from Taiwan, for adding a warm, homey touch to the space. Their Chinese motif with a modern twist also complements eth0s’ overarching East-meets-West theme – blending the two separate elements of the space together seamlessly.
