Shanghai's Yan'an Lu Trolleybus began service this week.

The No. 71 'congestion-defying' bus officially opened to the public on Wednesday after trial operations

The vehicle runs along 17.5 kilometers of a bus-only lane located underneath Yan’an Elevated Road. The route includes 25 stops and travels through four districts of Puxi: Huangpu, Jing’an, Minhang and Changning.

The journey is estimated to take 75 minutes, with four to five minute intervals during peak hours and eight to ten minute intervals at other times. A single journey on the trolley will cost RMB2.

The goal of the fancy new system is to make transportation around Shanghai faster and easier, with each bus expected to run at a speed of 18-19 kilometers per hour — twice as fast as other city buses. A journey on the trolley is said to feel smoother and more comfortable than a regular car.
