Weng Jijun & Wensen Qi: The Enduring Practices of Lacquer

Exhibiting the lacquer paintings of Weng Jijun and Wensen Qi, Galerie Dumonteil opens an exhibition tomorrow expounding upon the practice as a craft and an art form. With Jijun from China and Qi from France, the show puts the two countries in dialogue with each other, engaging in a conversation about the material and the new direction being forged within the genre.

Canadian art collective En Masse team up with artists from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and more for an immerisve group show at Art Labor opening tomorrow. This large-scale installation is comprised of acrylic, vinyl, Tyvek, LED signs and a host of other materials, combining of found and custom artifacts for a cohesive, colorful exhibition.

Melike Kara: A Taste of Parsley

Closing late next week, Yuz Museum hosts the first solo exhibition in China for Melike Kara, a Cologne-based artist who's known for her enigmatic portraits, which explore issues of identity and social hierarchies. The works in A Taste of Parsley range from sculptures to oil paintings to glass artwork meant to blur boundaries between the dream world and daily life.

Fileteado Porteño

Another one closing late next week, The Cervantes Library hosts the first Shanghai exhibition showcasing the Argentine art form of Fileteado Porteño, which originated in the early 20th century and was declared a piece of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2015. Known for its bright colors and use of national symbols, fruits, famous celebrities and historic figures, fileteado was first used to decorate vendors' vehicles in cities throughout Argentina. The art form was also influenced by Chinese art and some of the works on display reflect that.

Carte Blanche - Continuous Terminus

Continuous Terminus is a group show featuring a lot of video pieces and stuff made on computers. These futuresque digital works by Hsiung Cheng Kai and Mao Haonan are a combination of dark and optimistic, programmatic feats, a captivating addition to M50.

Capricious Structures

This multimedia exhibiton in Xintiandi showcases a number of independent projects from young artists living in Hangzhou, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and London/Amsterdam. Through visuals, they've set out to restructure narratives around concepts like urban conditions, industrialization, technology, economy and race, in a multidimensional exploration of identity and existence. And they have lazers. A lot of them.
