Shanghai Disney’s first theme land will be named "Treasure Cove", based on characters and stories from the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the resort announced this week.
The first theme land in a Disney park based on the “Pirates” films will include “Battle of the Sunken Treasure”, a boat ride featuring new effects and technology, designed specifically for Chinese guests. Disney shareholders were shown a first glance of the attraction at a meeting in Portland, Oregon, presided over by Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger.
“Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most iconic attractions in our parks, and we really couldn’t imagine Shanghai Disneyland without Pirates,” Iger said. “We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind experience that would appeal to our Chinese guests while remaining true to its Disney heritage.”
The new ride will feature the Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones characters. Disney has previously added Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow to “Pirates” rides in other parks, but the Shanghai ride will be the first to be specifically designed around the film franchise.
There was no mention whatsoever of Mistress Ching, a character from the third "Pirates" film based on Ching Shih, the feared and notorious female pirate commander of the middle Qing Dynasty. One would think Ching would fit in rather well at a pirate themed park in China.
Today’s announcement marks another milestone in Shanghai Disneyland’s development, set to open in 2015.
