Yesterday’s torrential rains were quite a surprise, particularly to those planning to attend the city’s inaugural edition of Budweiser Storm Electronic Music Festival – which was delayed 30 minutes due to the downpour.
As often happens in Guangzhou, flooding was a major issue, with some areas (looking at you Datong Lu) experiencing water depths of half a meter, according to a Guangdong Television report.
The city averaged 42.1 millimeters of rainfall yesterday (September 11), while Fenghuang Jie in Tianhe recorded the largest cumulative rainfall of 104.8 millimeters, reported Tencent News.
Guangdong has seen a notable spike in rainfall this year, with several cities and counties breaking cumulative rainfall records in the past few months. According to data from the Guangzhou Municipal Meteorological Observatory, as of September 10, Guangzhou’s cumulative rainfall in 2016 exceeded the historical record of 2678.96 millimeters set back in 1949.
The record breaking year of rainfall should come as no surprise, particularly when you think back to the flooding in early May that saw some Guangzhou residents take to the streets in Sea-Doos and dragon boats. There was also the rain and subsequent flooding that took eight lives in Xinyi, south of Guangzhou, later the same month.
Guangzhou residents should not expect the wet weather to relent any time soon, with The Weather Channel, aka weather.com, predicting rain, showers and thundershowers for nine out the next 10 days (forecast as of Monday, September 12, 1pm).
Pack that raincoat and umbrella when leaving the house this week folks – it’s almost certain you’ll need it!
