Talk about unncessary expenses!

Canisters of fresh, oxygen-rich air were recently handed out to participants of a tree planting event in Xi'an, Shaanxi provice last week. Each canister contains seven liters of air collected from the Qinling Mountains and sells for RMB18 (US$2.60) a pop.

It's unclear why fresh air was handed out at the event, though you'll often find similar oxygen canisters for sale in high altitude destinations (i.e. The Himalayas).

Still, Xi'an isn't exactly a place one would consider to be "high altitude," standing just 400 meters above sea level. But it does happen to have some pretty bad air pollution.
