Chinese Chef Tries to Cook Eggs Using Sun, Gets Heat Stroke Instead

In an attempt to fry up some eggs using only the heat of the sun, a Chongqing man inadvertently fried himself in the process.

According to South China Morning Post, the chef, known as Liu, works in a noodle restaurant, and wanted to show his customers how powerful the sun was after watching a video of a similar trick online.

While he did successfully demonstrate the sun’s intensity, the eggs remained largely unfazed, taking nearly an hour for each to cook. Liu, on the other hand, suffered heat stroke after many hours under the hot sun and had to be helped inside.

Liu had set up a row of frying pans in front of the establishment with a sign offering RMB1 ‘sun-fried eggs,’ and he even provided an optional e-payment for those customers lacking spare change.

“I didn’t think the eggs would take so long to cook as the sun was roasting,” noted one spectator. Another woman pointed out that “the eggs would have cooked more quickly” had Liu added hot oil to the pans.

When all was said and done, the eggs-austed chef netted a total of RMB5, enough for a bottle of cold water and maybe a couple more eggs.

Near unbearable heat waves have hit cities throughout China in the past week, with average highs of 37 degrees Celsius in Chongqing. On Friday, Shanghai saw its hottest day in 145 years, a face-melting 40.9 degrees Celsius.
