Zara's Freckles-Gate Prompts Debate on Beauty in China

A seemingly innocent promotion for Zara’s new line of lipsticks caused another controversy on social media. The whole debacle centers around a series of close-ups of model Li Jingwen’s freckled face, which had some ultra-sensitive Chinese netizens extremely fired up.

While some saw them as Zara’s deliberate attempt to make Asian women look ugly, others applauded the authenticity showcased in these photos, adding that Li’s freckles are actually quite cute. “We don’t live in a world of wanghong filters,” commented one Weibo user in defense of the fast fashion label.

In an attempt to set the record straight, Zara put out an official response saying that these photos were shot under natural lighting and had not been photoshopped.
