Chinese OSU student pepper sprayed by police after falling asleep in library

In another example of why police can't be trusted with pepper spray, let alone guns, a Chinese exchange student at Ohio State University (OSU) was maced by campus police officers after falling asleep in the library.

23 year old Chen Yuxiang, a math major, was studying late on December 15 at the 24 hour a day library. When staff noticed him falling asleep, he was asked to leave (it's unclear whether this is normal at OSU, most university libraries are littered with sleeping students, especially late at night) and invited to come back later.

When Chen returned to the library, he was confronted by police and accused of trespassing (in the library of the university of which he was a student). According to police, Chen "refused" to show his student ID to enter the library and allegedly tried to bite staff members.

"I think that the language barrier is one of the main barriers, but they slammed him to the ground and he's then pepper sprayed twice in the face," Chen's attorney Alex Hastie told reporters.

Chen was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest. OSU students and supporters of Chen have launched a petition calling for an apology from campus police.
