Mr. King Climbing Gym had its grand opening party yesterday on Wednesday, February 17, which was well-attended by enthusiasts and novices alike for an evening of pebble wrestling and wall-grappling.
We stopped by the event at 7pm and were surprised to see how packed it already was. Located right across from Net Valley in Shekou, the brand-new facility is located on the ground floor, easily accessible from the street. The space is 370 square meters and boasts 80 climbing routes ranked from V0 (easiest) through to V11 (hardest). The walls are designed by Entre-Prises, the official supplier of climbing walls for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
When we first arrived, we swapped our normal shoes for climbing shoes and warmed up with a fun virtual reality game where the player’s objective is to hit a bat moving around on the wall. Other climbers trickled in, many of whom skipped the VR experience to chalk their hands and get right to challenging themselves on the new walls.
Colin Malinak, a novice, remarked, “I have enjoyed getting to know the gyms across the city. I particularly enjoyed Mr. King for the location, friendly atmosphere and unique bonuses. It felt like a strong community with strangers helping each other with their paths and celebrating one another. I haven’t experienced that at other gyms in Shenzhen.”
A more experienced boulderer Callum Yap echoed the same sentiments. He told us that he considers Mr. King as “one of the best, along with Upper Climbing Gym and Triple Top.”
After climbing there’s a nice long table to relax at, with beverages like beer and organic coffee on offer.
From now until March 17, they’re offering reduced prices on all types of classes. A single pass is RMB118, five is RMB498 and 10 is RMB858. Membership for a year is RMB4,664 and private coaching for a year is RMB8,782. Afterward, prices will return to regular rates.
