The home of the Pearl Tower, xiaolongbao and the beautiful Bund has been given the honor of the best-looking Chinese city for expatriates. For the fourth time in six years, Shanghai has been labelled as the most attractive city for expats to live in China.
According to the International Talent Magazine and the China Society for Research on International Professional Personnel Exchange and Development, Shanghai scored the highest on the three important factors that evaluate the standard of living and environments in cities: policies governing foreign professionals, working environment and living environment. More than 48,000 expats living in Shanghai between September 2015 and February of this year participated in the survey. Beijing came second in the ranking, with Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin making up the top five.
One-sixth of China's expats currently live in Shanghai, with the expat population now at approximately 88,000. Now, with the opening of Disneyland and a growth in foreign businesses, this number could continue to go up.
However, earlier this year, Shanghai was ranked at 101 in consulting firm Mercer's annual quality of living city rankings. While Shanghai might be an expat's first choice in China, it's definitely not everybody's first choice around the world.
