What can you get for five dollars these days? A cup of coffee? That money ain’t gonna' last too long in Starbucks my friend. A decent meal? No chance. How about a movie with soundtrack, special effects, trailer, voiceover and marketing campaign? Are you fucking nuts? I can’t even afford coffee and a cookie with this bill. Firstly, calm down a bit, deep breaths. Seems unlikely, admittedly, but that’s exactly what Stephen Wright – a British director based in Shanghai - plans to do with his five-spot – a documentary film called, somewhat predictably, The Five Dollar Movie.
Inspired by the website Fivver.com – an American website selling all manner of services from graphic design to a woman who will ‘un-curse you,’ for a measly five dollars – Wright wanted to explore the community at large and the driving force behind offering such services for so little. What kind of money are people making from the site and whether the movement is redefining the price point for creativity? It made perfect sense then, to make the movie for five bucks.
Actually, five bucks may not be strictly accurate; the director has already spent the entire budget on an e-book called ‘Kickstarter Power: The Ultimate Crowdfunding Campaign Kit.’ However, using what he’s learnt from this book he has set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise US$1,000 to pay for some of the essentials needed to make and market the film – soundtrack, poster design, voiceover artists etc - all of which will be sourced back from the Fivver-istas.
If you want to be a part of this social experiment-cum-movie the Kickstarter campaign is still up-and-running, ending on August 22, and any donation means you get your photo and a credit in the movie. Now, that’s getting bang for your buck(s).
