A That's series where we ask a Shanghai-based somebody to tell us 5 Things specific to his or her life.
Alexey Golikov is a Russian-born, Shanghai-based model. We caught up with him during Shanghai Fashion Week to hear what it's like to model in Shanghai, his best and worst gigs and his favorite countries to model in.
1. The biggest cliche about modeling?
I guess it would have to be that I am in the gym everyday. Well, it is partly true, but that’s really part of my profession. Taking care of my body is very vital for my work.
2. Italy and the US are my favorite countries to model in.
Models there are treated with respect. Italians and Americans in the fashion industry value the essence of being a model. In addition to this, the compensation is very good as well. I wouldn't consider a specific country to be the worst, but I've been to a few where models were treated like pieces of meat.
3. I know that modeling is not a long-term career.
Having said that, I have just enrolled in a university to enhance my skills in Mandarin. I want to be fluent in Chinese and try my luck in the TV/movie industry here in China. I also want to focus on doing PR/marketing because I have a passion in this field... selling products to people. I believe I am very good in convincing others to do various things.
4. I once worked with Harry Winston.
It was a black-tie event so everyone looked very glamorous. A renowned artist was flown in to perform that night, apart from other local famous artists. Champagne was overflowing the entire night as well. My biggest achievement was working with Calvin Klein. My weirdest job? I was once asked to interact with guests at a party... not just to talk to them, but also forced to dance with them onstage.
5. And I've been asked to be an escort... sort of.
It was not a direct offer, but I could sense that it was leading to that. We were offered to have dinner with some socialites... and we were offered extra compensation if we spend more time with them.
