And here are our picks for a few of the day's many highlights:
Celebrate Women Exhibit
This international
photography project, which features women from China to the US to India to
Ghana, invites its subjects to respond to the question ‘What empowers
you?’ It was presented at the 2016 UN commission on the status of women
and celebrates the complexity of female identity (image via
nicolechan.org/celebratewomen).
Un Caffe Bar, all day.
Workshops
The bulk of Ladyfest’s offerings at Un Caffe Bar are
comprised of workshops on a diverse range of topics, including menstruation
and body positivity, sexual harassment awareness, BDSM positivity, multicultural teamwork, self-love, leadership and personal development
and lots more. Check the schedule for whatever piques your interest.
Un Caffe Bar & Specters, all day.
DKNSTRKT Drag Performance
Local
drag collective DKNSTRKT, fresh off their boyband workshop a few weeks
ago in which drag king newbies got their first taste of performing, will
showcase at Specters. DKNSTRKT is a collective of Shanghai artists who
challenge and deconstruct gender through drag. They believe in drag for
all, no matter your sexuality or gender identity.
Specters, 8.55pm.
The Shell of Me, The Color of Me
A video performance art piece, this work by art psychotherapist Viviana explores self-identity and the pull between our stereotypical outer shells and our true inner person.
Un Caffe Bar, all day.
Yoga
A
class focused on tapping into feminine energy, self-confidence and
empowerment. Other fitness and wellness options include workshops on
belly dancing, muaythai and more.
Un Caffe Bar, times vary.
“Strong Women” in Modern Western Mythology Talk
Led
by cultural anthropologists Andrea Kis and Richard Papp (Andi and Rik)
this talk examines gender norms across different societies to explore how
current mainstream culture and its mythology limits people’s expression
by propagating concepts of "real" or "true" femininity.
Un Caffe Bar, 6.10pm.
CinemQ Rider
Shanghai’s
leading purveyors of queer short films have curated a special line-up
of shorts about women and marginalized genders for Ladyfest. Sure to be
one of the highlights of the day, the films have been chosen based on
the theme of Rider (“Climb on top and ride hard. We are not the weaker
sexes, we are road warriors.”)
Specters, 6.50pm.
Afterparty
After
everything wraps up, Specters will jump into a long night of grrrl
power music, with DJs Metermaid, Velvet Robot, Bike Girl, Hello Shitty
(pictured) and more serving up everything from rocksteady and punk to
industrial, synthpop and dark wave.
Specters, 9pm.
Mar 24, 12pm-12am, no cover. Un Caffe Bar & Specters, see event listing. Follow Ladyfest on WeChat (Ladyfest_Shanghai) for full details.
