That's Shanghai takes a look at the best concerts of the week:
Sep 5: Novelists

Avant-garde nuclear metal band Novelists are coming to Yuyintang next Wednesday. While distinctly hardcore, what differentiates them are their emo-esque, darker-side-of-Warped-Tour vocals and cascading guitar riffs. For those that sported serious bangs and wrist bands in high school, take note.
Sep 5, 9pm, RMB160. Yuyintang, see event listing.
Sep 6: TOPS

Canadian indie-pop dream, TOPS' upbeat, lo-fi sound captures summer at its finest with airy chords and twangy guitars. They're good friends with Mac Demarco, and one listen tells you why - they're both on a mission to make retro relevant, and they're killing it.
Sep 6, 8.30pm, RMB120. Yuyintang Park, see event listing.
Sep 6: Hello Franky

This pop-punk band from Henan is celebrating their debut EP with a tour across China. For those of you who jumped around to New Found Glory or still get all the feels whenever 'First Date' comes on, you'll want to check these guys out on their Yuyintang stop.
Sep 6, 8.30pm, RMB60 presale, RMB80 door. Yuyintang, see event listing.
Sep 6: Constant & Change

Post-swing emo, complex drum beats and intense rhythms are what you'll get with Constant & Change. Thick synth embellishments and pop-culture splices punctuate radical melodies for an emotional set at Mao.
Sep 6, 8.30pm, RMB door. Mao Livehouse, see event listing.
Sep 7: Parachutes on Fire Album Release

Taking cues from psychedelic and classic rock, Parachutes on Fire are known for their groovy riffs, bold harmonies and aviation themed lyrics. This Shanghai-based five-piece rock band will be playing tracks from their newest album at Yuyintang, so go local and support your homegrown bands.
Sep 7, 8.30pm doors, RMB80. Yuyintang, see event listing.
Sep 7: Mykki Blanco

Electric Circus at The Shanghai Edition kicks off the first of their "Blacklist" parties with Mykki Blanco, Amber Akilla and DJ Toy. Blanco's rap, camp and performance artistry have earned him quite a name for himself (as did his performance at The Shelter before it closed), so this is sure to be a wild night. It's RSVP only, so if you want to attend, follow Electric Circus on Wechat: electriccircus.
Sep 7, 10pm, RSVP only. Electric Circus, see event listing.
Sep 8: D.A.N.
Flyer courtesy of the promoter.
This alt-pop band from Tokyo has opened for the likes of James Blake and The XX. On their tracks, funk meets translucent guitar in what's likely to be a dynamic show from this three-piece pod.

Sep 8: Wang Wen

This 20-year-old post-rock band from Dalian are making their way through Shanghai on their most recent China tour. Their latest album Invisible City dropped this past July - a landmark 10th album for the group. If you like pg.lost, Sigur Rós, We Lost The Sea, or melancholy guitar made for listening to in the rain, you might want to check out this show.
