Order Like a Health Coach at These Four Shanghai Restaurants

This is part of our Healthy & Delicious Restaurant Recipe Series.

Every year, we set forth on diets, detoxes and cleanses with the best of intentions. That's why we asked four Shanghai chefs to create lighter versions of their most flavorful dishes in our January issue. You can see those recipes here, but what if you are too busy or tired to cook?

It can be difficult to navigate menus full of deliciously decadent options by ourselves, and that's why we asked 'Power Me Healthy' columnist from our sister publication Urban Family Sharon Raccah Perez to take a look at the menus and offer up her top choices.

1. The Cannery's Glazed Smoked Yellow Fin Tuna Jaw

This is a smart choice because tuna is a lean fish which contributes to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. The daikon, horseradish and lemon relish isn't too creamy either.

Price: RMB198

See listing for The Cannery

2. Maya's Carribean Style Ceviche

This is both being satisfying and refreshing to the palette. Additionally, it scores points for not being cooked with oil.

Price: RMB78

3. Mi Xiang Yuan's Chicken Rice Set

Chicken is a good lean source of protein, especially if it is steamed. I would suggest removing the rice and adding more green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach or bok choy. The set comes with a daily soup that features seasonal vegetables.

Price: RMB35

4. Together's Pan Seared Snapper with Basil-Shallot Oil and Yuzu

This snapper is cooked without a heavy sauce, and the fish itself is a low-calorie, high-protein fish. As such, it contributes to lowering the risk of heart disease, Type-2 diabetes and osteoarthritis. The side dishes options are good from a nutrition standpoint, except for the potatoes and slaw.

Price: RMB148/small, RMB288/large
