Shanghai's subway network is set to grow by 100km (62 miles) with construction beginning this year. Plans include extensions to Lines 10 and 11, as well construction of a new Line 17.
According to a director of the construction commission, Tang Zhiping, over 30 km (18 miles) of new lines will be completed within the year, with 10 km (six miles) becoming operational. The Line 11 extension running from Luoshan Road to the new Disney theme park is set for completion in October and will mainly be overground, with only the final 1.5 km (one mile) below ground level.
According to the commission, government applications are also underway to apply for permission to start construction of Lines 15 and 18.
Shanghai's Metro system is currently the largest in the world, with the subway lines covering over 500 km (310 miles).
