New Bar: Epic

When Cross Yu of Muse on the Bund and Chris Xi from Fennel Lounge left to bartend at Epic last month, we followed their steps to leafy Gaoyou Lu with great curiosity. The two were named best bartenders of the World Class China competition in 2013 and 2014 respectively, and we had high hopes for their new collaboration. We were not disappointed.

Tucked inside a 1930s building and furnished in a modern post-industrial style, the bar boasts two stories of cozy couches, spacious bar counters and a rooftop terrace overlooking the lush views of this tranquil neighborhood.

The star team shakes up a variety of creative cocktails that span the lighthearted and mature. A pretty pink glass of sugar basil smash (RMB58) sees gin, strawberry syrup, lime juice and basil in a straightforward, refreshingly sweet and tart concoction. The Bermuda (RMB58), however, leads you somewhere more mysterious. A fusion of whisky, lime and ginger beer, the icy glass is the ultimate cooler and deliciously complex.

When stomachs begin to rumble, a towering plate of nachos (RMB38), laden with cheese and ground meat, adds a crispy touch to the night while juicy, tender cheeseburgers (RMB78) served with fries is a hot commodity on all the tables. We’re glad to have found another great spot catering to people looking for fine cocktails in quiet spaces, where conversation is not only possible, but encouraged.
