Soundbite: Goodfellas

Soundbites are pieces of food and drink related news and gossip to aid your digestion of the Shanghai dining scene.

Despite its prime Bund-side location, Goodfellas Italian restaurant sits inconspicuously beneath the view of the Pearl. Don’t be fooled by the restaurant’s modest exterior; what looks like a low-key neighborhood spot belies a hidden gem. In sharp contrast to the bustle of Yan’an Lu, the interior offers low lighting, slick decor and sounds of Frank Sinatra in the background. You’ll instantly be pulled away from the stress of your day.

Welcoming front-of-house staff will fetch you a cold Aperol Spritz while you look through the staple and seasonal offerings on the menu. Chef Antonio has worked in some of the great kitchens of the world (Cipriani, Venice and The Savoy in London to name a few) and his dishes are made from fresh, first-rate ingredients, many shipped straight from Italy.

Goodfellas offers an impressive appetizer selection. Pick from salty prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella (RMB158), tender tuna tartare (RMB128) or a wafer-thin beef carpaccio drizzled with a truffle sauce (RMB148). Can’t decide? We recommend trying a little bit of everything with a mixed appetizer platter for two people (RMB250).

Primi options vary from spicy puttanesca pasta (RMB98) to a creamy mushroom risotto (RMB128) with porcini undertones, which is possibly the best we have ever tasted.

If pizza is your poison, get straight to the point and order Antonio’s new creation; Goodfellas pizza (RMB138). Aged parmesan is topped with sweet cured bacon and a drizzle of balsamic on a paper-thin crunchy base – an absolute fail-safe.

If you have room for a main course, take on the grilled Canadian cod (RMB178). Served on a stew of tomatoes soaked in balsamic vinegar, this fresh-caught fish is a lighter choice where salt meets sweet in perfect marriage.  Carnivores will go crazy for Rossini (RMB238), juicy beef tenderloin with a portion of goose liver on top. Not for the faint-hearted, Madeira and truffle jus accentuates the grassy flavor of the plump Australian meat.

Dessert is another area where Chef Antonio shows off his culinary aptitude. Tiramisu offers all the rich coffee flavor and texture you would expect from an Italian expert.

The absolute hit however is his coconut panna cotta. While some versions of this classic can contain too much gelatin, his creation is smooth and creamy: a near perfect pudding. First impressions count and Goodfellas has us hooked.
