SpongeBob SquarePants fans take note: Asia’s second Nickelodeon-themed attraction, after last year’s opening of Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon in Malaysia, has begun construction in Foshan

The facility, which will be called the Nickelodeon Cultural Resort, is expected to open in 2020. The project is being spearheaded by American media corporation Viacom in partnership with government-backed Sanshui New Town Management Committee and Hong Kong conglomerate Elite Global Group, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The announcement further highlights just how booming China’s amusement park industry really is, something that was also demonstrated last year with the opening of the mainland’s first Disneyland in Shanghai.

The Foshan Nickelodeon park will cover 250 acres inside the 750-acre Foshan Cultural and Ecological Coastal Project, which will cost RMB11.9 billion to construct.

While it's unclear exactly what Nickelodeon elements will be incorporated into the park, the company’s Executive Vice President Ron Johnson has stated the facility will give guests the “opportunity to interact with iconic and beloved characters including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

No word yet on whether baby Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats gang with make an appearance…
