Contrary to popular belief, Shenzhen does have pockets of culture, just waiting to be explored. Nantou Ancient Town (南头古城) officially reopened last week after months-long renovations which began last October. Nantou Ancient Town is an ancient city site and the former administrative center of Xin’an County, its history dating back to 331 CE.

The aim of the renovation project was to “turn the ancient town into the most attractive destination for culture and history in Shenzhen.” The site already held a festival this past weekend and will continue to hold more art and cultural activities, marking itself as a destination in the Greater Bay Area. Currently, 90% of the 299 houses have been leased back and 88 buildings have been renovated.
