The 1st Shenzhen New Media Art Festival

The first festival in Chinese mainland to celebrate new media art

The Shenzhen New Media Art Festival is the first of its kind in Chinese mainland – a biennale conceived to be an urban festival, with a focus on new media art. The city of Shenzhen is strong in both areas of high-tech industry and cultural industry, which provides a perfect environment for new media art to flourish.

The Shenzhen New Media Art Festival aims to establish a global artistic platform which closely combines the arts with technology as well as culture with industry. Through this, the Chinese public can experience the interactive, scientific, participative and entertaining characteristics of new media art.

The first Shenzhen New Media Art Festival invites 16 international individual media artists and art groups with works in all forms across various media, e.g. screen-based, game device art, kinetic installation, interactive installation and sound work, etc. These works represent the development of media art and its diversity, offering visitors the key into a regenerated exhibit space (which used to be an old glass factory) and the exciting experience created bytechnology and creativity.

What Is New Media Art?

Different from traditional art forms, new media art develops on the base of emerging media technologies and artists’ individual ideas. New media art extends its reach to the different dimensions of space, reorganizes and reforms, and deconstructs the real and virtual visions and spaces using digital programming and interactive sensory technology. It is expressed in a variety of forms such as image, sculpture, interactive installation and sound.

The Exhibit Space

The Guangdong Float Glass Factory was built in 1987, taking up an area of about 120,000 square meters. In 2009, the factory closed down and had all main equipment removed, leaving a massive empty building and the memory of industrial past. In this December, this deserted old space will be given a new life as it will house many dynamic new media artworks and welcome swarms of art lovers to come visit.
